How to Visit New Mexico’s Castles

Well, if you’re a New Mexico local then you probably already know that getting around the state is really tough without a car. There just isn’t good public transportation between cities. Since you really need your own wheels, I have tips below for renting a car if you don’t have one.

The Best Castles in New Mexico

In no particular order…

Turquoise Castle

New Mexico - Albuquerque - Turquoise Castle

This state-of-the-art castle in Albuquerque has crystal chandeliers, beautiful floral arrangements in all rooms, antiques, and most importantly, easily readable information panels. The Turquoise is owned by the Zachary Lowry family which has been here for five generations.

Today the castle serves as a museum with rare collectible antiques, jewelry, and pieces of fine turquoise.

This magnificent castle has a statuary garden, grounds with a fountain, and lovely trees.

ABQ BioPark Castle

New Mexico - Albuquerque - BioPark Castle

The Albuquerque BioPark castle has a fourteen-foot topiary dragon that guards the castle gates. Visitors and nature lovers are in for a treat as they get to see an array of horticulture on display. The park has a monarch butterfly garden, a pollinator garden, and also Mediterranean and desert conservatories.

The ABQ Park Castle opened officially in 1996, and the 32-acre botanic garden showcases various plants from all over the world. This magnificent park is located along the Rio Grande river, just next to downtown Albuquerque.

The Tano Castle

New Mexico - Santa Fe - Tano Castle

The Tano Castle is a massive residential estate in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It has five bedrooms, five bathrooms, and is made from double adobe walls. The first thing you’ll notice when driving through is the adobe and frame tower adjacent to the entry doors. It has a tall deck by the spiral staircase covered in a blue tile floor and carved custom doors.

The property sits on nearly five acres and is over ten thousand square feet, complete with grandly spacious rooms.

The Tano Castle was bought in the early 1980s and has hosted some British parliament members and New Mexico governors.

Blue Castle Automotive

New Mexico - Albuquerque - Blue Castle Automotive

Okay, you might find it strange that this castle is actually an automotive shop, but it’s so wonderfully kitschy that I love it!

This shop is an automotive repair and maintenance service industry that offers the best professional car services and general automotive repair shop. Blue Castle Automotive has been around for nearly 25 years and has a team of expert mechanics who are quite reliable.

Of course, you’re not looking to get your car fixed, you’re looking to visit a castle. This one offers a perfect kitschy Instagram opportunity. Just make sure you don’t clash with that very, very blue exterior!

Camelot Mini Storage

New Mexico - Ruidoso - Camelot Mini Storage

Another kitschy New Mexico Castle is this entrance to Camelot Mini Storage. While you may not need a storage solution, you can still come to the entrance for a fun New Mexico castle photo shoot!

Earthships

New Mexico - Taos - self sustainable living in energy efficient earthship high mountain desert Taos, New Mexico

Earthships are thermal solar earth shelters made from upcycled natural materials. The buildings are often horseshoe-shaped and made from an environmentally sustainable design that factors in energy, sewage treatment, garbage management, clean water, and food.

The Earthship idea started in the 1970s, and the concept has advanced ever since. The primary purpose of this shelter is to provide what’s needed for inhabitant survival naturally.
