When I planned on spending three weeks over Christmas visiting my family in Oklahoma City, I had so many places I wanted to visit.

But then I spent the last two weeks of those three weeks with a stomach bug so bad I thought I might be dying, and most of my plans got scrapped.

My Favorite Travel Booking Sites for 2023

These are my favorite companies that I use on my own travels.

Protect Your Trip via Safety Wing

Find the best city tours, day tours, bus tours, & skip-the-line tickets on GetYourGuide and Viator.

Find the best deals on hotels & vacation rentals on Booking.com.

For English-speaking private airport transfers, book through Welcome Pickups.

For road trips and independent travel, rent a car through Discover Cars.

Find information and cruise reviews on Cruise Critic.

For packing and travel essentials order via Amazon.

Book an affordable family or romantic photography session on your trip through Flytographer (Use the code HISTORYFANGIRL for 10% off your first photoshoot).

For travel guidebooks to have with you during your trip, I always pick one or two from Rick Steves and Lonely Planet.

But before I got sick, my little brother and I (who likes to refer to me as his little sister because he’s 6’5″) spent an afternoon walking around Martin Park Nature Center, which was beautiful even in winter. The park is 140 acres containing three (small) trails and multiple education facilities and events. It’s free to the public, and easily accessible by car with ample free parking.

These days, there are lots of places for fun outdoors around OKC, but growing up, Martin Nature Park was one of the first places people would go to enjoy a day out. I have many memories from my childhood skipping rocks and looking for turtles.

Here are my favorite pics from my trip this time:

I always make sure to get travel insurance whenever I’m going to be over one hundred miles from home, in large cities where tourists can be the target of pickpockets, and anytime I’ll be doing outdoor activities.
